Anna Maria Island was first settled by Tampa Mayor Madison Post who named the island for his wife Maria and his sister-in-law Anna. Since Cuban fisherman were the first visitors to this area it was very soon after dominated by other lovers of water!
In 1892, George Emerson Bean became the first full time resident on the Island, developing much of what is now the City of Anna Maria. Now the northernmost tip of the island is referred to as Bean Point (pictured above). Between 1892 and 1922 Anna Maria Island as we know it was being cultivated into the beautiful vacation destination we know and love!
After Bean's death in 1898, the land he owned transferred to his son, George W. Bean. George partnered with Charles Roser to form the Anna Maria Beach Company. The company laid out streets, built sidewalks and houses, and installed a water system. In the summer of 1921 construction began on the first bridge that was built to connect Anna Maria Island to mainland Florida. The bridge was finished in 1922 and it connected what is now Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach to the fishing town of Cortez. This allowed more visitors to begin enjoying the island, which in turn piqued the interest of several businessmen.
Today Anna Maria Island has become one of the most popular locations in Florida, visited by both locals and tourists. Its abundance of wildlife and nature has attracted many scholars of different sciences and is a huge draw for those looking to enjoy just a little of the island life!
